NAMA Requests FDA Finalize Calorie Disclosure Rule, Extend Compliance Date and Provide Flexibility

From NAMA – NAMA MEMBER ALERT:
NAMA Requests FDA Finalize Calorie Disclosure Rule,
Extend Compliance Date and Provide Flexibility
Dear NAMA Members,
This month, NAMA formally requested that the FDA extend the compliance date for front-of-pack (FOP) Calorie Disclosure on products sold in vending machines to align with the FDA’s proposed extension of the Nutrition Facts Label, finalize the font size for FOP, and detail signage requirements for gums, mints, and roll candy. With these actions, the FDA can reduce consumer confusion, eliminate duplicative and costly package redesigns, and provide operators flexibility to meet FDA’s Calorie Disclosure requirements.
In short, NAMA requested that the FDA:
*Extend Calorie Disclosure in glass front vending machines to align with the proposed extension of the revised Nutrition Facts Label;
*Finalize the required font size for front-of-pack Calorie Disclosure;
*Approve signage for the labeling of gum, mints, and roll candy disclosure; and
*Allow multi-serve packages to provide front of pack labeling as “x calories per serving and y servings per package”
If granted, these requests will provide clarity, flexibility and certainty for compliance for consumers and operators. Click here to read NAMA’s request to the FDA. https://www.namanow.org/pdf/NAMA-FDA-Letter-11.21.17-FINAL.PDF
